Arawind Thatte

Arawind is known all over India as one of the most competent accompanists on the harmonium. Born in a family with his father and brother already accomplished harmonium players, he became proficient in harmonium at a very early age. He also learned tabla from a very well known teacher, Pandit G. L. Samant of Pune. His interest in vocal music took hem to Bharat Gayan Samaj, a music school of long standing. From 1981 to 1996 Arawind became closely associated with Pandit Jasraj, both as a disciple in vocal music and as an accompanist. He has accompanied Kumar Gandharva, Bhimsen Joshi, Jasraj, Malini Rajurkar, Kishori Amonkar, Prabha Atre, Parveen Sultana, Niwruttibua Sarnaik, Gajanbua Joshi, Mallikarjun Mansur, Vasantrao Deshpande, Ram Marathe, K. G. Ginde, Jitendra Abhisheki, Laxmi Shankar, Shobha Gurtu, C. R. Vyas, Manik Varma, Gangubai Hangal, Girja Devi and many others.

Arawind secured the first place in All India Radio solo competition in 1982 and Kumar Gandhrva Award from Ram Pujari Prathishthan of Solapur in 1993. He has to his credit many cassette and CD recordings both as an accompanist and as a solo performer on harmonium.

In addition to being a renowned accompanist, in the past few years, Arawind has become well known for his innovative technique in the way he presents solo performances. After studying the harmonium in great depth he has also developed a special method of tuning it correctly.

With a Ph.D. in pure mathematics Arawind has had a brilliant academic career, but he devotes all of his time to classical music.
