Appendix 6: Department of News Services Exceptions

ABBREVIATIONS

Abbreviate names of months per Associated Press/United Press International (AP/UPI) style.
  • The meeting will be held Sept. 3 in Bloomington, Ind.

When a group, organization, or other entity is known by an acronym, it is often unnecessary to include the abbreviation in parentheses immediately after the acronym, unless the acronym is obscure.

  • Ronald Jackson is a professor in the Graduate School of Public Health. He has taught at GSPH since 1982.

ADDRESSES

News releases and Pitt Chronicle should defer to AP/UPI style for addresses.

  • John Doe lives at 200 S. Main St. in Greensburg, Pa.

BUILDINGS

Pitt Med magazine only: Western Psych and Presby are acceptable in quoted matter.

DASHES

News releases and Pitt Chronicle only: Do not use en dashes.

DATES, MONTHS

Abbreviate dates per AP style:
